Private organizations owned and operated by their members and to whom the SEC delegates much of its authority to oversee both securities markets and participants in those markets. All SRO rules and regulations must be approved by the SEC. An SRO may be either a national exchange, such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), or a national securities association such as the NASD.
